Professional Aspirations: What A Sleep Technologist Does
A sleep technologist is the medical professional responsible for performing many types of diagnostic tests, commonly known as “sleep studies”. The majority of these studies are performed in an overnight setting with the sleep technologist completing two studies per shift. Certain studies are performed during the day and deal with excessive daytime sleepiness and possibly shift workers. The sleep technologist is responsible for:
- Greeting the patients and getting them settled in
- Taking patient vitals and various clinical activities
- Answering questions about the study itself,
- Preparing the patient for the study through the application of electrodes and other medical measuring equipment to various parts of the body
- Reviewing and charting the progress of the study throughout the night.
- Caring for the patient while the study is being performed including any emergency intervention that may be necessary.
This environment provides a safer alternative in healthcare as the process is completely non-invasive to the patient. The work night is a 10 hour shift starting at 8pm and ending at 6am. Full-time employment holds a requirement of 4 shifts each week with 8 shifts completed in each biweekly pay period. Per-diem overnight technologist opportunities may be available only to registered or registry-eligible technologists with at least 2 years of sleep experience. Remote scoring opportunities may be available to registered technologists with at least 3 years of experience in scoring sleep studies.
The Setting
SleepTech is a nationwide leader when it comes to partnership services in sleep medicine. Our partner centers are designed with the patient in mind, creating a hotel-like atmosphere instead of a cold, sterile medical environment. We work extensively with both hospitals and physician groups to create a warm and non-threatening environment to achieve the most robust results possible from each individual study. Our sleep technologists work with some of the most reliable and well-tested diagnostic equipment on the market. They are extensively trained on all components and feel comfortable in each of the centers they work in. Each technologist is dedicated to multiple centers for the greatest exposure to various disorders and the best use of our workforce.
The Requirements
At SleepTech, we don’t have the “tunnel vision” approach that most other sleep medicine specialists do. We are willing to train medical professionals that have a strong desire to work as sleep technologists. There are a few requirements for eligibility to be considered for a position.
Medical Experience
All entry level candidates must have at least 1 year of current (or very recent) experience as a clinical healthcare professional. It is strongly preferred that interested parties have a basic knowledge of EKG events, respiratory function and general body function. We may consider clinical rotations as a part of that requirement if licensure has already been achieved in your specialty area.
In positions like remote scoring or per-diem technologist, prior experience and registration may be necessary as outlined above.
Shift Experience
All candidates must have maintained at least part-time or per-diem employment in an overnight shift. F/T overnight professionals are strongly preferred.
Technological Experience
Candidates must have a basic working knowledge of MS Windows based computer systems.
Education
Candidates must have a high-school diploma (or equivalent) and have completed a professional program in nursing, respiratory or other related medical specialty. A mastery of the English language (written and spoken) and strong communication skills are also required for consideration.
Citizenship
SleepTech requires that you have unrestricted authorization to work in the US. We do not provide any sponsorship to candidates at the current time.
